High-tech
If you find yourself explaining your future product through sketches and a lot of hand movements and phrases like “And then…” and “Imagine if…”, you might want to take a gander at this stuff.

Made to Order
With all the ability of creating 3D objects, there has been a catch-up phase for creating physical copies of these pixel-born objects. That catch-up is happening now, and is happening quickly. One can now print in almost any material, ranging from metals and plastics, to porcelain, glass, and even food such as cheese or sugar. Notable milestones as of late are the Nike 3D printed shoe, the Vapor Laser Talon. The shoe was 3D printed to escape the constraints of conventional manufacturing. I would liken it to an organic object growing to…

Language, Personality, and Computer Code
The last couple of weeks have been a flurry of activity. Along with our usual flow of production, we’re participating in Intel’s Perceptual Computing Challenge. Part of the process for entry included creating a working demo showing the basics of what we’re intending to do, take video of someone using the demo, and submit the code. Because we’re planning to create the app in Unity, this meant a crash course in how to connect Unity with the provided SDK (Software Developer Kit, tools and docs to help us get started)…

A Lesson Learned from the Granddaddy of Computer Graphics Software
Lately we’ve been having a great time working on interactive projects, trying to design intuitive and easy-to-understand touch interfaces. User Interface (UI) design has always been fascinating to me, so our recent focus on interaction has been exciting, and a bit daunting — and I’ve gained a new appreciation for some of the interfaces that we take for granted today. Take, for example, the original Macintosh. The basic concepts of a “graphical” computer interface were still in flux. Graphical UIs had been in use in academia, and high-powered research facilities like…

Future of Data
I will be attending Autodesk University November 27-29 in Las Vegas. I’m looking forward to this as I have never been, and the conference has deep roots in the architecture and design world, where I made my career start before going into the VFX and animation field. A description of A.U. from the site: Autodesk University Conference and Exhibition, Las Vegas. Autodesk University’s flagship event is its annual conference and exhibition in Las Vegas where design professionals from around the world attend classes, keynotes, product demonstrations, exhibits and networking events. Attendees can…

You are the Button: Notes from a Visit by Amber Case, Cyborg Anthropologist
Amber Case is an interesting person. She’s driven and quirky and geeky, and not afraid to make a fuss about something that she believes in. And she’s got some really interesting ideas about how we interact with technology, and what a future filled with mobile smart devices could look like. And she thinks that the future of interaction is all about where you are. Or to put it another way, “Location, location, location!” She came to visit as a guest speaker at a joint CHIFOO (Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon) and…
