The Joys of Dungeon Mastering: I have just picked up the reigns of mine and my friends long running Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Thanks to Skyrim coming out while I was planning for this adventure, my story is all about dragons taking over the world. Oddly enough, in our three years of adventuring, we’ve never actually faced off against a dragon. I decided to flip that around and turn dragons from the ultimate end boss of the storyline to the most prominent and visible creatures in the game world. First night…

(This article is a continuation from More than Games Part 1. Check out Part 3 here.) This year I had the pleasure of attending Unite11, a conference for developers on the Unity3D platform. Here are some more non-game uses for Unity that I found really interesting. Interactive Training Another burgeoning field for interactive 3D applications is training. This is more than just pictures, animation and quizzes. Using a 3D interactive engine opens up training skills that, in the past, would have required a real-world training environment and instructors. In our age of limited…

    Working Stiffs Keep it Loose

Our network went down briefly today. ADi’s 3D Technical Director, Nick Nakadate just lurked into the office during the lull with his NERF Vigilon and sprayed a scattershot of discs across the conference room table. “He’s pretty accurate,” Artistic Director, Vince Nimmoor offered, “because of the quality of his gun, which is boardline cheat-level because he special orders his.” You might think that these things have slowed down here at the offices of Animation Dynamics, Incorporated in beautiful Industrial Northwest Portland. It’s quite the contrary, in truth. Despite the fact that the Consumer Electronics…

(This is a multi-part series. Check out part 2 here and part 3 here.) This year I had the pleasure of attending Unite11, a conference for developers on the Unity3D platform. Unity’s a flexible, powerful, and multi-platform 3D interactive development package. It’s primary use is in making 3D games, but its toolset is flexible enough to make it useful in a number of other areas. This conference was a place for people to show off their Unity tools, games and interactive software, with a number of seminars on techniques and showcases…

If you’ve been following our journal posts here lately, you’re probably aware that we at ADi are really excited about the potential of interactive 3D development. The most common use of 3D interactivity is with games, but we can see that there’s potential for lots more: storytelling, training, explaining, or even just letting someone have fun while they browse a catalog. Right now, our tool of choice for interactive 3D development is Unity (unity3d.com). It’s got the power of a full-featured cutting-edge game engine, combined with ease of programming and…
