Amber Case is an interesting person. She’s driven and quirky and geeky, and not afraid to make a fuss about something that she believes in. And she’s got some really interesting ideas about how we interact with technology, and what a future filled with mobile smart devices could look like. And she thinks that the future of interaction is all about where you are. Or to put it another way, “Location, location, location!” She came to visit as a guest speaker at a joint CHIFOO (Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon) and…

With 3D animation, typically, everything you need to get the job done is at your fingertips, i.e. a keyboard. A new job we’re working on currently involves a historical recreation in a live event setting. To me, it feels much more like field or line producing. We’re hiring a wardrobe stylist. Talent will be piping in VO via ISDN from New York. Event specs need to be coordinated with the event manager and relayed to projectionists contracting on the job. Quite a few moving parts, to be sure. People often talk…

This year, I’ve made three trips to Las Vegas for three different trade shows. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), The Digital Signage Expo (DSE) and Infocomm. These three shows, while of varying sizes and attendees, have quite a few similarities in terms of exhibitors. Here are some things I found in common at all three shows (without naming and shaming specific companies): There were more than a few instances of display screens with nothing on them but error messages. (sad trombone noise) There was a lot of what I’d call “borrowed” content –…

One of the many technologies we’re fascinated with is AR (Augmented Reality). For those who aren’t familiar with it, AR is basically a way of adding computer-generated objects and information into live, real-world video. In other words, you can see through the “eye” of the computer (or phone or other device with a camera) and see an alternate reality that’s been augmented with extra stuff. Stuff that’s been added in by someone like ADi. AR has a lot of potential in the kind of work that we do. By manipulating reality,…

Insightful reading on the X, on the Y, in the T(ech).

    By Kate Ertmann

I havent done a post in awhile that is a collection of some of my favorite posts from other folks I admire. Of late, as I travel more to speak at conferences, I find myself reaching out to the interwebs more to see if I can find other folks thoughts on why there is such a dearth of women at these (usually tech-heavy) conferences, and other related posts about women in business in general. I am always surprised that some things just stay the same, one of those being the…
