More than Games: Takeaways from Unite11 (Part 1)
(This is a multi-part series. Check out part 2 here and part 3 here.) This year I had the pleasure of attending Unite11, a conference for developers on the Unity3D platform. Unity’s a flexible, powerful, and multi-platform 3D interactive development package. It’s primary use is in making 3D games, but its toolset is flexible enough to make it useful in a number of other areas. This conference was a place for people to show off their Unity tools, games and interactive software, with a number of seminars on techniques and showcases…

Bringing the concept to life – Planar and ADi Part Two
Today we’re going to hear from Vince Nimmoor. Vince is the ADi art director and a major contributor to the second phase of our project with Planar. Technology and Artistry Mashup for Planar and ADi
Planar, maker of many kinds of cool display technologies, approached ADi with a unique proposition. Conceive and design an animation for a video display. The display is pretty much one of a kind – ten feet tall, made of 4 display panels with almost no bezel. They are mounted on a tree-like frame that sprouts up out of a base that cleverly disguises the media player and inner workings of the “Art Wall”. We are going to follow the progress of this project and show you step by step how it comes…

Looking forward to Unite11
If you’ve been following our journal posts here lately, you’re probably aware that we at ADi are really excited about the potential of interactive 3D development. The most common use of 3D interactivity is with games, but we can see that there’s potential for lots more: storytelling, training, explaining, or even just letting someone have fun while they browse a catalog. Right now, our tool of choice for interactive 3D development is Unity (unity3d.com). It’s got the power of a full-featured cutting-edge game engine, combined with ease of programming and…

Some Co-creation examples and idea starters
Companies large and small are embracing co-creation. Here are some examples that I think demonstrate some best practices and a few tips to keep from doing it wrong. Kimberly-Clark brand Huggies was doing some market research about their main consumers, Moms, and discovered that while many Moms are small business owners, they get a very tiny share of venture capital dollars. They started a program called MomInspired to help Moms turn their business ideas into reality. Moms can apply for a grant to help get the business going, and also get…
