The last couple of weeks have been a flurry of activity. Along with our usual flow of production, we’re participating in Intel’s Perceptual Computing Challenge. Part of the process for entry included creating a working demo showing the basics of what we’re intending to do, take video of someone using the demo, and submit the code. Because we’re planning to create the app in Unity, this meant a crash course in how to connect Unity with the provided SDK (Software Developer Kit, tools and docs to help us get started)…

    Conferences…as an attendee!?!

I had the pleasure of attending two conferences this past month that I wasn’t a speaker at. I got to attend them purely as a member of the audience. Those of you who are speakers know that this small shift in category of attendance really affects how you approach the conference; in this case I could chill, just listen, only participate in a conversation if I felt there may be a longer-term goal in there to pursue. But for the most part –I could be pretty dang anonymous and take…

Lately we’ve been having a great time working on interactive projects, trying to design intuitive and easy-to-understand touch interfaces. User Interface (UI) design has always been fascinating to me, so our recent focus on interaction has been exciting, and a bit daunting — and I’ve gained a new appreciation for some of the interfaces that we take for granted today. Take, for example, the original Macintosh. The basic concepts of a “graphical” computer interface were still in flux. Graphical UIs had been in use in academia, and high-powered research facilities like…

Amber Case is an interesting person. She’s driven and quirky and geeky, and not afraid to make a fuss about something that she believes in. And she’s got some really interesting ideas about how we interact with technology, and what a future filled with mobile smart devices could look like. And she thinks that the future of interaction is all about where you are. Or to put it another way, “Location, location, location!” She came to visit as a guest speaker at a joint CHIFOO (Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon) and…

Content and Context: the two go hand in hand

This year, I’ve made three trips to Las Vegas for three different trade shows. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), The Digital Signage Expo (DSE) and Infocomm. These three shows, while of varying sizes and attendees, have quite a few similarities in terms of exhibitors. Here are some things I found in common at all three shows (without naming and shaming specific companies): There were more than a few instances of display screens with nothing on them but error messages. (sad trombone noise) There was a lot of what I’d call “borrowed” content –…
