In 2009, I wrote a post about my search for a digital tablet that I could use as a replacement for my sketchbook and notebook. I’ve been an advocate for tablet devices as artistic tools for many years. Mainstream business culture is waking up to the potential that ultra-portable tablets like iPad and Android tablets have as work devices. We are spoiled for choice of Office-compatible apps and suites, email clients, file sharing… everything you need for a day away from the desktop. For us visual types, there are even…

Asimov’s and Sci Fi magazines are a great inspiration to me and my artwork. A collection of 6 or so short sci fi and fantasy related stories are held in a $10 book. For me the short form stories are just enough to build a world and deliver a concise story leaving plenty of room for your mind to travel. Part of the process for entry included creating a working demo showing the basics of what we’re intending to do, take video of someone using the demo, and submit the code. Because we’re planning to create the app in Unity, this meant a crash course in how to connect Unity with the provided SDK (Software Developer Kit, tools and docs to help us get started)…

My January mini project, check out the whole process at http://alexmillerartist.blogspot.com/ Something I’ve been thinking about lately has been focus, it has always been a struggle for me to focus in the short and long term. I started a project in which I have one project a month that I will focus on, bringing it through the stages of visual development to a completed shot with animation. In terms of my own work, the problem I usually deal with is being distracted not just by time wasting content, but by different ideas…

A Lesson Learned from the Granddaddy of Computer Graphics Software

Lately we’ve been having a great time working on interactive projects, trying to design intuitive and easy-to-understand touch interfaces. User Interface (UI) design has always been fascinating to me, so our recent focus on interaction has been exciting, and a bit daunting — and I’ve gained a new appreciation for some of the interfaces that we take for granted today. Take, for example, the original Macintosh. The basic concepts of a “graphical” computer interface were still in flux. Graphical UIs had been in use in academia, and high-powered research facilities like…
