Paul Clements and C4D
Photo by Paul Clements A few weeks ago I went to see a talk with Paul Clements, a motion graphics artist with some awesome work under his belt. His more recent work had caught my eye, https://vimeo.com/33174546 being nothing short of awesome. He had done a breakdown video showing the layers of effects and his trial effects – but at the talk he went even deeper opening the program and showing his process. http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/2012/01/ministry-of-sound-headphone-spot-breakdown/ Paul’s design sense is quite amazing as seen through his work, but C4D lends itself so well to…

Music Videos are Right Around the Corner
I worked with Jim Blashfield on a music video for Weird Al Yankovic right out of college. It was a great opportunity, really taught me the ropes of working in the “biz” for a director. We made a music video for a song called “Pancreas” on a compilation disc Weird Al put out a while ago. It was an interesting experiment, a disc with a CD on one side and a DVD on the other. Future of Data
I will be attending Autodesk University November 27-29 in Las Vegas. I’m looking forward to this as I have never been, and the conference has deep roots in the architecture and design world, where I made my career start before going into the VFX and animation field. A description of A.U. from the site: Autodesk University Conference and Exhibition, Las Vegas. Autodesk University’s flagship event is its annual conference and exhibition in Las Vegas where design professionals from around the world attend classes, keynotes, product demonstrations, exhibits and networking events. Attendees can…

You are the Button: Notes from a Visit by Amber Case, Cyborg Anthropologist
Amber Case is an interesting person. She’s driven and quirky and geeky, and not afraid to make a fuss about something that she believes in. And she’s got some really interesting ideas about how we interact with technology, and what a future filled with mobile smart devices could look like. And she thinks that the future of interaction is all about where you are. Or to put it another way, “Location, location, location!” She came to visit as a guest speaker at a joint CHIFOO (Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon) and…

Operating Outside the Box
With 3D animation, typically, everything you need to get the job done is at your fingertips, i.e. a keyboard. A new job we’re working on currently involves a historical recreation in a live event setting. To me, it feels much more like field or line producing. We’re hiring a wardrobe stylist. Talent will be piping in VO via ISDN from New York. Event specs need to be coordinated with the event manager and relayed to projectionists contracting on the job. Quite a few moving parts, to be sure. People often talk…
