    Getting Myself to Draw

Related Skill Sets: 2D, 3D, Interactive

One of my favorite things about working at ADi is the way Kate (our President) keeps encouraging us in our personal development and in working better as a team. As part of this, we recently had a team-building day where we did all sorts of self-discovery and generally had a good time together. During our most recent event, we were encouraged to make an “outrageous commitment.” I was feeling really ambitious that day, so I decided that I would commit to draw a drawing every day for a month. It’s been…

More and more frequently in the last few years, we’ve been working on projects that are intended to be seen by a variety of audiences around the world. The usual process for “localization” (customizing a project for a particular region) involves translating any text or voice content, changing colors or layout, or even replacing actors and photos where there might be cultural ramifications. As you might imagine, localization can be an expensive process. Our clients are usually on strict budgets (who isn’t nowadays?), so money spent on localizing a product is…

She’s brings up a lot of really interesting points on the topic, about problem-solving attitudes, work habits, gamer types and historical parallels, and how we can map game-style tasks over to real life. But in my mind, the concept is pretty basic, and goes something like this: Video games are, at their core, basically…

The Quest for a New File Server (Part 2)

    Related Solutions: High-tech

This is continued from a previous post. Have a gander if you haven’t already. Okay, where were we? Oh yeah, the future. 3. Shop for the future We’ve had our current file system for about five years. It’s done a great job for us, and only recently have we started feeling cramped. I want the replacement system to serve us for at least that long, so it’s important to make sure that whatever solution I choose will still work for us in five years. Our demands on our equipment increase every year. This is…

The Quest for a New File Server (Part 1)

    Related Solutions: Consumer, High-tech, Training

A couple weeks ago, we had a little accident here at the studio. The air conditioning in our server room was shut off inadverently, and it got pretty hot in there before we had a chance to fix the problem. Fortunately none of our servers or render boxes seem to have been affected. Unfortunately, though, we’ve begun having problems with our file storage system. These things tend to be very sensitive to heat, and we’re seeing the writing on the wall — it’s time to look for a replacement storage…
